San Francisco is one of America's most vibrant and
cosmopolitan cities with a diverse population, forging the
city's status as one of the true liberal meccas of the west. It
is most famous for its stunning Golden Gate Bridge, which spans
1.71 miles in length and reaches a height of 227 m. San
Francisco is also widely regarded as the gay capital of the
western world and hosts a famous gay pride event each year.
Over the years, large numbers of Americans from conservative
Midwestern states have flocked to San Francisco in search of
greater acceptance and tolerance. There have also been a high
number of immigrants from the Far East from countries such as
China (ironically to the west) who have travelled across the
Pacific in search of a better life in the Free World.
Unsurprisingly, the nightlife in San Francisco ranks amongst
the best to be found anywhere in the United States. Some of the
most popular nightclubs in the city include: Amber - popular
with European tourists, Club Deluxe - known for its excellent
jazz nights, Ruby Skye - 111 Minna Street Gallery, Dolce and
the Red Devil Lounge. Popular gay bars in the Castro district
include Endup, Metro and The Pilsner Inn. Popular adult
entertainment venues in the city include Broadway Showgirls
(popular for birthday's and stag weekends) and the Roaring 20's
(a more vintage venue). If you are a fan of karaoke bars, the Do Re Mi should not
go amiss! Here you can enjoy a party in a private room
where you can sing in front of your friends and you can
also save money by bringing your alcohol to the private
rooms.
Before entering a club, it is important to be aware that in
the USA (unlike in Europe) there is a strict over 21 drinking
policy - which means that any member of your party who cannot
prove by identification that they are over 21 will not be
permitted to buy alcohol. Because of this rule, a high number
of nightclubs in the country operate a 21 and over policy for
entrance to the club as well. However, the good news is that
most clubs include nights for the "18 and overs". Combine this
with the fact that in San Francisco there can never be too few
clubs to satisfy anyone's taste, the drinking rule should not
usually be a problem. As a major city, there are also plenty of
clubs operating "25 and overs" nights and other that
cater to the more mature crowd.
The first thing you may want to consider before taking a
trip to San Francisco is how you intend to travel. If you are
staying for a while, then you may be interested in travelling
further afield and exploring trendy San Jose or the stunning
Yosemite National Park. Car hire in San Francisco is easy to
obtain and the best place to start your journey would be the
airport where you would pick up your car.
