Cruising and Sailing in San Francisco

There are a number of ways to enjoy the sun and water that surrounds San Francisco. Bring your swimsuit and enjoy Baker Beach which is located in a picturesque cove west of the Golden Gate Bridge. The public beach is about a half-mile long and is part of the Presidio which was originally a military base.

To visit Alcatraz or Angel Island, you will have to take a ferry. You get the benefit of time on the water and a tour at the end of your trip. There are sunset and other sightseeing cruises around the bay on a chartered sailboat.

If you have wanted to learn to sail, a vacation in San Francisco is a good time to take lessons. The bay offers a relatively protected area in which you can learn the finer aspects of sailing. There are a number of schools that offer excellent instruction in the skills of sailing and navigation. You will not become a full-fledged sailor after a few Boatslessons but you will find out if it is something you really want to do.

Some companies rent boats for a day or for a weekend to experienced sailors. This is a great outing for the entire family.

Golden Gate Park is the largest park in the city and has many attractions including Stow Lake. Rowboats, pedal boats, and electrically powered boats can be rented for time on the water.

Another interesting water "sport" is sailing model yachts. Spreckels Lake is located on the northern side of the park and is the home of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club. The lake is equipped with special means for sailing of these "yachts."

When planning your San Francisco vacation, you should spend at least one day on or at the water. The entire family will enjoy the experience.
